Nonprofit Startup Talk
Limited Capacity seats available

While startup culture has traditionally existed primarily around technology companies, the last five years have seen growth in non-profits as startups. Well known cases including charity:water have been successful in raising venture capital-style funding and successful startup accelerators such as Y-Combinator are now funding non-profits. The days of ineffective non-profits raising traditional grant money and building endowments is quickly being replaced by new, innovative funding models for a new generation of non-profit.

In this session we'll discuss case studies of new-age non-profits that are operating like startups. We will also have a conversation and Q&A centered around GOAT including their bootstrapped startup relying on non-traditional, young donors, their use of The Mountain Goat Indoor Rock Climbing gym as a main funding source, and their Youth Entrepreneur Program that provides new programs for the kids they serve while adding revenues in a sustainable model.

Coffee Cupping at Ally Coffee
Limited Capacity seats available

In business, design, or coffee one of the more useless, but oft repeated phrases is, "I don't how to explain what I like, but I'll know it when I see it." Being able to clearly explain your taste to people is a key in business that is often overlooked. Learning to taste wine or beer or coffee is a great way to learn how to speak in a common langugue with your client or vendor and to clearly get what you want.

Come out to a coffee cupping (tasting) at Ally Coffee in the Taylors Mill to learn about the different flavors of coffee, become better at explaining what you like, and learn about the great business success of Ally.

Seats are limited to please add to Sched to ensure a seat.

September TEDxGreenville Salon
Food for Thought:
Alleviating Greenville's Food Deserts

For many, if not for most of us, Greenvilleis a thriving city -- and a well-fed city, with bulging supermarkets, crowded farmers markets, and scores of local farms selling healthly, culturally appropriate food directly to our residents.

But for many in our area, ready access to healthful food is a struggle, either because they live in "food deserts" -- areas where good foods are not just around the corner and available -- or because limited income does not seem to offer healthful alternatives to processed foods.

The September TEDxGreenvilleSalon looks at these issues through the voices of two advocates spreading a ministry of better nutritional access and knowledge throughout the community.

The growing Community & Culture of the Greenville Health System Swamp Rabbit Trail
May 2009 was when the start-up “The GHS Swamp Rabbit Trail” cut its ribbon with 3000 people hitting the trail that day on the then only 4-mile section in Travelers Rest. 6 years and 14 more miles later the GHS Swamp Rabbit Trail sees over a half a million users annually. It has quickly become the Main St for Greenville County.

Enjoy an evening discussing the unique culture that has been built around the GHS Swamp Rabbit Trail from how the Mayor of Greenville thought the name “Swamp Rabbit” was “Sticky” and gave his support to carry the name through the iconic parks of downtown Greenville, to how businesses are seeking out locations along the trail not merely for customers but because it provides a “coolness” that helps recruit employees. This evening will also be a chance to paint the future of this truly collaborative project that is bringing regular national recognition for not merely its heavy use but for cultural identity is has and continues to create.
